Welcome to Fonda Loves, a curation of our favourite happenings in London’s arts and culture scene.
As the city starts to cool down, we’ll be warming up indoors in the company of captivating art, theatre and the latest films.
Frieze London | 9-13 October
Our favourite time of year. We’re particularly looking forward to this year’s themed section, Smoke, presenting ceramic works by international artists that explore diasporic and indigenous histories. The fair’s reconfigured layout also means more space for emerging artists to be front and centre. A celebration of the most exciting art being made today.
Barcelona | Starting 21 October
Lily Collins makes her West End debut in Barcelona at the Duke of York’s Theatre. An American tourist has a casual encounter with a handsome Spaniard, danger ensues as the personal and the political intertwine. A seductive thriller “exploring the fantasy of who we pretend to be, versus the truth of who we are.”
Black History Month | October
First celebrated in the UK in 1978 to honour the history, traditions, and culture of Black people around the world. There are many talks, exhibitions, and screenings taking place to celebrate the month, including the following:
- Royal African Society Film Festival, 25 Oct-3 Nov: London’s biggest festival celebrating the best of African cinema.
- Black Queer History Exhibition, Somerset House, starting 11 October: an exploration of the joy, friendship, resistance, and art of Black LGBTQ+ in Britain.
BFI London Film Festival | 9-20 October
The 68th BFI Film Festival kicks off the festival season with a 255-strong line up and 39 world premieres. With Prince Charles Cinema and Vue West End just 10 minutes from Fonda, here are some screenings we’ll be checking out:
- Maria: Angelina Jolie stars as iconic opera singer Maria Callas during her final days in 1970s Paris.
- Nightbitch: a gender-bending exploration of motherhood.
- The Seed of the Sacred Fig: an ambitious judge in Tehran’s Revolutionary court grapples with paranoia and political unrest.
- Disclaimer: Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón’s UK premiere from his new series, an adaptation of the best-selling novel by Renée Knight.
Urs Fischer, 'Scratch & Sniff' | Until 26 October
One of Chef Santiago’s favourite independent art galleries, which happens to be around the corner from Fonda. Representing a roster of established and emerging international artists, they’re currently exhibiting Scratch & Sniff by Swiss artist Urs Fischer. Exploring painting and installation, Scratch & Sniff speaks to the idea of an impatient contemporary living, reflecting the “urgent computation of the mass of visual images” we consume daily.
