Welcome to Fonda Loves, a curation of our favourite happenings in London’s arts and culture scene.
From the annual Turner Prize to Mexico’s most popular holiday, here’s everything on our ‘must-do’ list this month.
Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) | 2-3 Nov
A joyful celebration commemorating those no longer with us. Here are our top picks for where to partake in Day of the Dead festivities in London:
- Day of the Dead Festival, 2-3 Nov: taking over Hackney Bridge’s outdoor and indoor spaces decorated for the occasion, enjoy all things Mexican from folk music and dance, to a street food and arts & crafts market.
- Day of the Dead at KOL, 2 Nov: KOL’s annual Day of the Dead event is back with an impressive line up of guest chefs and bartenders, featuring Endo Kazutoshi, Hélène Darroze, Isaac McHale, Giorgio Bargiani, and Ago Perrone. Meanwhile at their downstairs Mezcaleria, expect Catrina-style face painting, classic cocktails with a twist, plenty of antojitos, and a mariachi band. Tickets are now sold out for both, but be sure to check it out next year.
- Day of the Dead at Columbia Road, 2 Nov: in collaboration with local florists, shops will be decorated with flowers, and shopkeepers in festive dress. We highly recommend watching the procession with a mariachi band and stopping at the beauty parlour to get the Day of the Dead look.
London East Asia Film Festival | Until 3 Nov
A celebration of East Asian cinema and culture returns for its ninth edition, this time at ODEON Luxe Leicester Square and The Cinema at Selfridges. LEAFF showcases cinematic gems from Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam and beyond, with this year’s entries exploring survival, resilience, and aspiration. Don’t forget to enjoy the soju and makgeolli cocktails at The Cinema.
Leading Design: London | 6-7 November
A two day gathering of design leaders from around the world, featuring insightful talks from keynote speakers and many opportunities to network. Taking place at the iconic Barbican Centre, Leading Design provides space to learn, share, and connect with pioneering individuals in the industry.
Christmas Lights Switch-On | 7 November
Perhaps it’s too early to talk about Christmas, but London during the festive period is absolutely joyful. We’ll definitely be popping out of the restaurant to go to the switch-ons at nearby Regent Street and St James’s on Thursday 7 November.
Into Film Festival | 8-29 November
The UK’s largest youth film festival, with a diverse range of films showcased across the country. There are many screenings happening at various London cinemas, and they’re free! A fun day out, especially for those with children.
Oedipus | Until 4 January 2025
Starring Mark Strong and Lesley Manville, Sophocles’ Ancient Greek tragedy is reimagined into an explosive thriller at Wyndham’s Theatre. Set on election night, this play explores the themes of power, ignorance, family, and the human condition.
Outlaws: Fashion Renegades of 80s London | Until 9 March 2025
Established in 1985 by designer and performance artist Leigh Bowery, the iconic nightclub Taboo sparked a movement that used “the language of hedonistic excess” to create fashion, art, and popular culture. On at the Fashion and Textile Museum in Bermondsey, Outlaws displays original garments from Bowery and over 30 designers, plus photography, film, and artwork.
Turner Prize 2024 | Until 16 February 2025
With the likes of Tracey Emin’s unmade bed and Damien Hirst’s pickled shark tank having won past awards, British artists dream of receiving a Turner Prize. You can now catch this year’s nominees – Pio Abad, Claudette Johnson, Jasleen Kaur, and Delaine Le Bas – on display at Tate Britain.
